My dad was diagnosed with colon cancer, which had metastisized to his
liver, two years ago this month. He had all of the cancer removed from
his colon and has tried several things for the tumors in his liver,
including therasphere. He's managed to decrease the size of them a
little, by taking Xeloda, immune system supplements, and going on a
strict no-sugar, no-animal fat diet. His CEA dropped way down to 4 at
its lowest, but in the last month, it has gone up from around 8 to 18.
He's going in to try ablation in the next couple of weeks. All in all
we're amazed at how well he's done, as the prognosis wasn't very good
at the start. Now we're thinking he needs to find a new kind of
chemotherapy to try, since the Xeloda may eventually stop working.
We're looking for a low dose oral chemotherapy that's not Xeloda. Is
anyone aware of such a drug that is available outside clinical trials?
---------------------
-Not really much help but here's an article about some guys work that looks
promising.
I've spoke to him via email and he says it will be a long time before his
work bears fruits if it ever does.
He was even kind enough to supply me with information on where these
chemicals exist in plants naturally and some research paper links.
He also said if he sees any trials on these chemicals he would get in
touch - maybe someone in here knows about any? (The chemicals are called annonaceous acetogenins, highly toxic to cancer
cells leaving normal cells intact and are being targeted at MDR strains of
cancer (multi drug resistant))
I was reading that one of these chemicals was particularly effective against
colon cancer and almost 10,000x more toxic to cancer cells than a current
chemodrug.
I asked one of the doctors treating my mother what he thought - he said the
evidence was there, just it hasn't gone through trials yet. -. Your postings have made me
smile, even while going through some pretty dark times. There have
been a whole range of emotions since my dad was diagnosed--lately
cautiously calm and happy--and I know I can expect even more to come.
My dad seems so in control of everything now. He's sure the diet is
how he's managed to recover and stay healthy for so long (he goes to
the health club almost every day!) but I don't really know what to
think. I don't know which part of everything (or the combination) is
what's responsible for how well he seems to be. He makes all of his
own decisions about what to do, and I try to be encouraging. I just
want to enjoy his well-being while it lasts and keep up with his
requests for Net searches on new stuff to try. I do worry about how we
all will take it when things stop working.
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to pass on all of the information
and your encouragement. Your patience, kindness, and sense of humor
must continue to touch so many lives. Though I'm not really religious,
I pray for my dad most nights. For what its worth, I have added your
name (and several others from this group), as well.
