Melanoma and Topical Chemotherapy

my friend recently went to her dermatologist to have a few spots on her face checked out. She thought they were acne scars, but since she spent about 5 years baking in the sun to try and clear up her adult onset acne, she just wanted to be sure. The doctor told her he wasn't sure; he suggested that she use an ointment that he had used 3 times himself, "just in case". He told her if there were any pre-cancerous cells that this would kill them off. It wasn't until she got home (as she was in shock) that she read the materials the nurse had given her, and realized it was a topical chemotherapy treatment. The doctor didn't mention anything about side effects beyond peeling and reddened skin.

My question is - has anyone been through something similar? My friend is too freaked out to go on the net and check this out. Yet, she's still worried. If you've used this, what are the side effects? Has anyone had a second opinion on this? It just seems like a really quick suggestion, given that the doctor wasn't sure he saw anything, and I'm worried that the treatment may be worse than the potential disease!

-Topical 5FU is a common treatment for small basal cell or squamous cell cancers, though not melanomas. It's not usually cyrative, whereas surgery or radiotherapy is.
