Colon cancer chemotherapy

My father, who is 83 years old, recently had colon surgery to remove a large cancerous tumor. Four lymph nodes were found to be cancerous, also. He is now facing the prospect of chemotherapy. Two options have been presented to him: one is a 6-month course of treatment with 4 doses one week, then off 3 weeks, etc,; the other is 1 dose per week for 1 year.

He has been told that the side effects are minimal (sore mouth which will be taken care of with a mouthwash, and diarrhea which can be controlled with Immodium-AD).

I am wondering if anyone has had such treatments and what the side-effects were really like!

-It would be a good idea to find out the names of the suggested 'protocols' (usually letters of drug name names or the names of the drugs themselves) to help people answer your question. I also strongly recommend that you subscribe to the Colon Cancer listserv. It is free and the members there will be familiar with your dad's issues. I think you will get sound advice there. To subscribe, go to the following URL, and scroll down the list of available lists until you find "COLON CANCER", then follow directions. It is easy to do.

-My husband survived colon cancer 2 years ago. His treatment was the 52 week/once a week treatment involving the drugs 5-FU (fluorouricil) and levamisol (sp?). Diahhrea was a problem throughout, it was controlled with Immodium. As he got deeped into the treatment he experience body aches and nausea. Regular Accupuncture treatments greatly helped the latter as did fairly strong anti-nausea medication (Compazine and stronger).
