 | Chemotherapy - Loss of Hair |
|
|
My sister-in-law is receiving chemotherapy for her breast cancer and
as a result her hair is thinning badly and this is likely to worsen.
She has searched for hats and wigs which has not been easy, but does
anyone have any advice on the use of headscarves and imaginative ways
of tying them in order to make her problem less conspicuous? Any
pointers would be gratefully received.
---------------------
-When I was taking chemo I decided to simply grin and 'bare' it. I
did nothing except wear a cap when I was in the sun. I've seen
numerous patients who seem to have the same attitude. -A couple of years back, I went through chemo for the second time and
was as bald as an egg the second time. I bought a wig, but they are
so uncomfortable that I left it in the box. My head is too big for
most hats...even without hair...so standard hats were out. I had a
couple of knit hats that worked pretty well, but the majority of the
time it was winter and I needed something to keep my head warm. One lady at The Wellness Center in Knoxville, TN came and showed us
how she tied scarves on her head and they were very attractive. The
scarves she had were larger than those you normally buy at the store.
If I were going through this again, I would probably buy thin material
and make my own so I could get the right size. The old TV show,
Rhoda with Valerie Harper had a segment last week about the scarves
she wore and how she tied them...they were very fashionable! The most important thing is to give her hugs as often as you can and
remind her that hair grows back...most of the time thicker and curley!
Encouragement is very important and hair loss is only a temporary
condition. Giving up hair for a few months is worth the many years
that you get, after it is all over
