Nause & Vomiting induced by Chemotherapy

My friend's mum gets breast cancer and she have to receive chemotherapy for 9 months. But she developed appetite loss and vomiting even after the first dose. How could we reduce or prevent these side effects both non-pharmacologically and pharmacologically ?

---------------------

-My doctor has me on "Kytril" which I take 2x a day for 3 days after my chemo. These pills eliminate the nausea and vomiting, but are very expensive unless your medical plan can pay for it.

-Dr prescribed promethazine, I use it before, during and after I take my chemo pills. It helps me hold down the chemo pills (Procarbazine) and it reduces nausea greatly. Two pills when it's bad, one when it starts clearing up. I have no appetite during the chemo, though I do eat because I know I have to. Helps me hold down what I eat, upchucked just a few times. My biggest side effect from promethazine is "I sleep like a log" and I am very hard to wake up when I take it. Not drowsy, just sleep hard.

Over the counter was not strong enough

Makes a big difference in my case.

Ask the doctor, he knows best.

-She can try Zofran first. If that doesn't work, then Kytril with decadron usually does the trick.

-Zofran has always eliminated the nausea for me, and has allowed me to eat (not that I'm hungry, just prudent.) In deep chemotherapy, it usually comes out looking like it did when it went in.
