Does anyone have any information on or experience with the side effects,
both long and short term, of cisplatinum.Chemotherapy Source Book?
---------------------
-Here is some info from the Testicular Cancer Physician Info page: Since the majority of testis cancer patients who receive chemotherapy are
curable, it is important to be aware of possible long-term effects of
platinum-based treatment: 1. Fertility: Many patients have oligospermia or sperm abnormalities prior to
therapy. Virtually all become oligospermic during chemotherapy. However, many
recover sperm production and can father children. The children do not appear
to have an increased risk of congenital malformations.[11-13] 2. Secondary leukemias: Scattered reports of secondary acute leukemia,
primarily non-lymphocytic, have appeared. In some cases, they were
associated with the prolonged use of alkylating agents or with the use of
radiation.[14] One group, however, has reported secondary non-lymphocytic
leukemia associated with treatment with bleomycin, etoposide, and platinum (BEP).[15] The leukemia appeared to be related to the cumulative dose of
etoposide, since five cases occurred among 82 patients receiving more than 2000
mg/m2 and none occurred in 130 patients who received less than 2000 mg/m2. 3. Renal function: minor decreases in creatinine clearance occur (about a 15%
decrease, on average) during platinum-based therapy, but these appear to remain
stable in the long term, without significant deterioration.[16] 4. Hearing: Bilateral hearing deficits occur with cisplatin-based
chemotherapy, but they generally occur at sound frequencies of 4 to 8 kHz,
outside the range of conversational tones.[16] Therefore, hearing aids are
rarely required at standard doses of cisplatin. -I think the best place to start would be a general oncology text, such
as Principles and Practice of Cancer, or a text on chemotherapy in
general such as The Chemotherapy Source Book. While these are medical
texts, they'll have enough pertinent information for you.
