chemotherapy & medicine

This is a question my sister-in-law wanted me to post. Can chemo cause type 1 diabetes ? If yes, will the diabetes go away once the body has recovered from the chemo? She has at least 3 more treatments although they did change the type of chemotherapy medicine. The treatments are every three weeks. She did not have diabetes before chemo. The night after her third treatment she was rushed to the hospital and put in intensive care for 3 days and 2 more days in a room with all visitors having to wear mask and gown. Her bg was 800 and more and she was very sick. She has no memory of the first 2 days in the hospital. Now she takes insulin shots after breakfast and after supper. Chemo treatment was resumed two weeks after dismissal from the hospital. Her bg's are between 200 & 250 . I think she does the bg before breakfast and before supper. There are times when the bg's are higher. She doesn't know what questions to ask the doctors. I'm not much help because I am Type 2 and I'm still learning about diabetes myself. She has been given some instructions and has talked to a dietitian. One might wonder that since she has several doctors, no one doctor will take the lead in advising her? By the way,she had breast cancer and a mastectomy. She is in her forty's ,was very active and in good health before being diagnosed with the cancer.

-An endrocrinologist should probably be added to her health team, preferaby one who has treated chemo patients before.

Around here, most believe that we are the head of our medical team, and that all members of the team should be responsive to us. Here's a good article about "Getting the Best" when you work with a medical team. It might help her: http://www.neuropathy-trust.org/Dr%20Ellis%201.htm

-I too had breast cancer but had a lumpectomy. It was almost six years ago and I am a survivor. But one night I was not feeling well, and I was told to go to the hospital and see if my blood count was okay. Before I was seen, I had a high fever, I was very thirsty and I had a can of seven up. I saw on my chdart that my sugar was 400. No one said one word to me.

I was on cmf which is cytoxin, methatraxate and five f u. Fast forward to last June. I have a skin condition called psoriasisand the treatment for that is the use of the pill methatraxate , which was one of my chemo pills and now I have diabetes that has been diagnosed. After I had the cancer and was finished my sugar was fine. This is not scientific or even an opinion it just seems odd.
